ABSTRACTION
The impossible problem of painting "the thing itself", rather than an example, is deeply compelling to me. I am interested in the distinctions between idea, icon, and the simple presence of a thing that was brought into the world through human touch and breath, which carries the memory of these acts.
A metaphor I return to when painting is that of a desert which hides a screen, behind which is a well and inside the well is water. The painting oscillates between becoming the desert, the screen, and the well.
A wise leader once wrote no thing is inanimate, only silent.
I aspire to make paintings which gaze at the viewer and sing.
